How to make the Perfect Hamburger and Potato Casserole

Prepare the beef: Heat a dash of olive oil in the skillet and cook chopped onions until translucent and ground beef until no longer pink. Add some minced garlic and cook for just one minute.

Make the sauce: In a small saucepan, combine heavy cream, milk, onion powder, salt, pepper, paprika, powdered mustard, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir until the sauce begins to boil, then remove from heat.

Slice the potatoes: Peel and slice the potatoes, making sure they are sliced thinly, around 1/8-inch thickness.

Arrange your casserole. Add one layer of beef, then potatoes, creamy sauce, and shredded cheese. Repeat until you have used up the ingredients, but keep some shredded cheese to one side.

Bake: Preheat your oven to 375F. Cover your hamburger potato casserole in foil and bake for 50 to 60 minutes or until the potatoes are fork-tender. Remove the foil, sprinkle cheese on top, and cook for a further 10 minutes for a crispy, cheesy topping.

Pro Tips For The Best Hamburger Potato Casserole

  • Use a mandoline slicer to cut potatoes evenly thin (about 1/8-inch) for uniform cooking. If slicing by hand, aim for consistent thickness.
  • Freshly shredded cheese melts smoother and creamier than pre-shredded cheese, which often contains anti-caking agents.
  • Drain excess grease from ground beef if it isn’t very lean to prevent the casserole from being greasy.
  • Test potatoes with a fork before adding the final cheese layer. If they’re not tender, bake a bit longer.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. Reheat in the oven or microwave until warmed through.

Key Ingredients and Substitutions

  • Ground beef:  Lean ground beef offers great flavor and doesn’t release much liquid, preventing a greasy casserole. If using a fattier cut, simply drain excess fat after browning. Alternatively, you can substitute ground turkey, chicken, or Italian sausage. Keep in mind that turkey and chicken have a milder flavor, so you may need to adjust your seasoning slightly to achieve the same depth of taste.
  • Yukon gold potatoes: Their sweet, buttery, and earthy flavor makes them perfect for this casserole. Russet potatoes also work as a great substitute.
  • Colby Jack cheese: With its mild, buttery, and melty flavor, it’s an excellent choice for casseroles. For a stronger flavor, try using medium cheddar instead.
