Homemade Fruit and Vegetable Wash
Not time to whip up a fruit wash? Check out these tried and true store-bought fruit and vegetable cleaners:
- Eatcleaner – This is my tried and true storebought fruit and veggie wash. However, it’s not the easiest thing to find in Canada (when I go to the states, I bring it home with me).
- Honest Company – I just added this to this month’s shipment from Honest. I have heard incredible things about this fruit wash, so I will keep this post updated when it arrives.
Why wash your produce?
Washing fruits and vegetables is so important. I once listened to a podcast that stated that the majority of foodborne illness wasn’t from meat (like a lot of us assume) but from contaminated fruit and vegetables. You want to wash your produce not just to remove pesticides and dirt from the soil but to remove bacteria from the many hands that touch your food

How to wash fruit and vegetables
Simple spray your produce with the cleaner and let it sit for 5 – 10 minutes and rinse.
That’s it, it’s super easy!
TBK’s Pro Tip: If I don’t have fruit and vegetable wash on hand or the produce cleaner bottle handy, I’ll fill my sink with cold water and add some vinegar and a few drops of grapefruit and lemon essential oil. Then I’ll let it sit for 5-10 minutes and rinse.
Once the produce is clean, I think cut what needs to be cut and store in these containers. I love them because any water falls to the bottom and doesn’t touch the fruit/vegetables. This helps your produce last longer and will help you save money in the long run.
TBK’s Pro Tip: When washing soft fruit (like raspberries) I lay them on a towel and let them dry completely before I put them in the fridge.
