Moving? Here’s How To Get The New House Clean

Moving? Here's how to get the new house clean. We're talking killing mold and getting rid of mildew, cleaning mattresses and furniture, plus deodorizing and getting rid of the "old owner smell".
I’m moving! How exciting is that? I love the idea of starting over in a fresh house. I can’t wait to get started on the organizing, the renovations, and just getting the new house clean.
Yes, you read right, I’m excited to CLEAN. There is something about starting over in a clean house, free of the previous owner’s “air and germs”. The afternoon we get our keys, I’ll be bringing over a few cleaning supplies and Lysol® Disinfectant Spray (in green apple, my favorite). It’s a product that I have been using for years and since it kills 99.9% of viruses and bacteria that we come in contact with every day, it’s a product I trust.

New House Clean:

I’ll be using the Lysol® Disinfectant Spray in the obvious cleaning spots: toilets, showers, vanities, hardware, light switches and doorknobs. That being said did you know that it also kills mold and mildew? I didn’t know before writing this post (and I may have gone a little spray-happy in our rental).
Here are a few of the surprising places I’ll be disinfecting before we move in:
  • All of the window tracks
  • Kitchen cupboards
  • Dishwasher
  • Our mattresses and other soft surfaces (like our sofa and loveseat)

Disinfects Fabrics:

Did you know you can disinfect your mattresses and other soft furniture? I’ve been doing it for years but I wasn’t sure if it was the “right thing to do”. This is good news for fabrics that are not washed as often (backpacks, shoes, hockey gear, furniture, mattresses).
I’m loving this news as I’m still night-training my son and sometimes accidents happen and the mattress protector doesn’t always do its job.
Lysol® Disinfectant Spray is versatile and I’m happy to know that by sanitizing and disinfecting both the hard and soft surfaces in my house, I will also be deodorizing my home.

Kills Mold & Mildew:

The house has been empty for a while, the air has been still and even when the previous owners lived there, I don’t believe they were big cleaners. One of the first things I noticed about the house we bought was there was a lot of green and black in the window tracks. The first thing I’m going to do is take the Lysol® Disinfectant Spray and soak the tracks and let it stand for at least ten minutes, I’ll wipe it clean and I’ll probably spray it again (for good measure).
I’ll also be spraying the inside (and outside) of the dishwasher and then running a hot water and vinegar cycle to clean the inside parts.
I’m sure I’ll find a few other surprise mildew spots in the house, but I’m not worried. It will be nice to have a few days to clean and it helps that the house is empty.

As For Right Now:

I still have a little time before we get the keys, so I have been doing my usual cleaning and disinfecting (especially right now since I have a cold). I spray all our door knobs, TV remotes, phones and my MacBook. I use my MacBook multiple times a day, so a light spray on the keyboard makes me feel a lot cleaner.
Lysol does more than just keeping my house clean, it helps me keep my home and my family healthy.

  1. Well this is a useful product for sure. I don’t think I have seen the green apple version of Lysol. I will look for that. I never ever considered spraying my keyboard on the computer but maybe I will do that. Hope the move went well.

  2. I love Lysol products! I too spray “everything” dog’s bed, curtins, couch and cushions, on and on lol I didn’t think about the laptop though. Next!

  3. Thanks for the link to the coupon. Ugh the window tracks are the worst to clean in the spring!! Hoping for a smooth move for you.

  4. I love Lysol!! I feels like my house is so much cleaner when I use it!! I can see how this is a great tool for a new house!

  5. When you move into a new place it is great to have a couple of friends or family members who can help you give the place a DEEP clean before you move all your stuff in.

  6. Leaving our old house where it was just our germs into a “used” home was hard. Getting everything cleaned was so important to me.

  7. Great idea, when I did the move to a new house, it was the number one task. I wanted to restore order, even make a small rearrangement.
