O’Bon Review
This giveaway is now closed
In the last year I have become more aware of going “green”. I wouldn’t say I am overly passionate about it, but if I have the option of going green: I take it. I clean with vinegar, baking soda, etc, I shop organic as much as I can, and I now use O’Bon notebooks.
So who is O’Bon?
“The philosophy behind O’BON is simple: Take a common school item, such as a pencil, and turn it into something exciting, something special, and something different. We strive to end the days when pencils came in bland colors, broke constantly and consumed valuable environmental resources. Made from old newspaper, and manufactured in a variety of designs and colors, our pencils are setting new standards for environmentally friendly school and office supplies. And pencils are only part of what we do. You will find that our entire line of school supplies is unique, exciting and fun.
Quality, Responsibility and Affordability
O’BON is a United States based company dedicated to designing, manufacturing and distributing stationery products such as pencils and erasers. At O’BON, we strive to incorporate 3 fundamental elements into every one of our products, specifically – quality, responsibility and affordability. Our loyalty lies passionately in the hands of our customers, and behind every single product we make exists a determined effort to surpass any and all expectations you may have of us. “
O’Bon sent me one notebook and one binder. To be more specific; the notebook O’Bon sent me is the Birds Series – A5 Spiral Notebook – Violet.
When I first received my notebook I noticed how beautiful the cover was, I have never seen something so visually stimulating on office supplies. I write in notebooks every day. I have my to-do lists, food journals, long term to-do lists and just plain old notes or doodles. I always make sure I use every inch of space on my notepad before I toss it away, because I feel that if I don’t, I’m wasting the tree that, after growing for forty years, was cut down (not saying I’m against logging, I am originally from a logging town. My dad’s a logger, and many friends rely on logging for their livelihood).
Then I found O’Bon. The paper in the notebook is made from sugarcane! Sugarcane paper is very eco-friendly because it is a re-newable resource. Unlike trees, sugarcane grows quickly and when you have the dried bits leftover, they take it and make paper! I was fascinated by this concept, and I don’t feel like I’m wasting paper when I use it. As for writing on it…there is nothing different between sugarcane paper or regular old fashioned paper. I will be ordering through O’Bon from now on.
They also sent me a binder. The Birds Series – 1 inch – Emerald
Their binders are made from recycled cardboard. It is very sturdy. I switched my family binder (which was flimsy and was very annoying) to the O’Bon binder because of how strong it is. Do you remember the old five star commercials where they would play hockey with the school supplies? Well, every since those commercials I always test my binders. I just simply throw it on the floor, hard and you would be amazed at how many binders couldn’t hold it together (there is nothing more annoying then having a full binder and having it break, so I test it before hand). O’Bon held on strong. One feature about the O’Bon binder that I love is the spine. Do you see in the picture? It has a “built in” label. I LOVE labels and labeling, so it was a nice to see a designated space for me to write on.

After reading your article and a few others I purchased a few O’BON products myself and I was every bit as excited as you were. I love their bird series notebooks and decided to buy two of these. My favorite thing about the pencils is sharpening them and seeing the newspaper pages in the scraps. It adds something to the pencil and lets me know that they really do use newspaper to make the pencils 🙂
